Nursery School

Core Competencies

To support children to be successful in working towards the Early Learning Goals we have developed 6 Core Competencies, which we believe are essential life skills and attitudes children must develop to enable them to be confident life long learners.

Earlham Nursery School Core Competencies:

  • Confidence Competency
  • Emotional Competency
  • Involvement Competency
  • Motivation, Curiosity and Security Competency
  • Resilience and Persistence Competency
  • Risk Taking Competency

Our bespoke curriculum, supported by the 6 Core Competencies, frame the opportunities offered to all children across the nursery. Staff use the curriculum to structure the learning opportunities and extended provision to ensure every child has success.

Each Competency is progressive, allowing children to develop their skills over time. Children may move up or down during their time in school. A child may have a significant life event, which could impact their emotional wellbeing and result in them regressing. Staff use their in depth knowledge of each child to identify any changes in a child's behaviour and plan adaptions accordingly. The 6 core competencies support staff to identify these changes and consider what they need to put in place to support the child.

Each competency also comes with an overview of some of the ways staff create a environment which allows each child to be successful and develop these core skills and attitudes.

Children progress up the ladder, with the aim that they would have reach the top by the time they leave the nursery and move into reception.
